I had an interesting experience relayed to me from a civil contracting company in Dunedin. Their worker suffered serious injuries when a ladder collapsed on him on a construction site. While the worker was a big boy (118kg) it was puzzling why the ladder collapsed – until the worker himself pointed out that with all of his tools and the workpiece, he would indeed have exceeded the ladder capacity.
Given that the maximum safe ladder load is not that far beyond the weight of even your “average” beefy construction worker, it makes sense to consider your TOTAL weight before launching up the ladder.
Consider passing this learning onto your team.
